Keeping your skin looking healthy and young is not a matter of chance. Changes in the texture and the tone of your skin are inevitable aspects of aging. Wrinkles form, pores enlarge, blemishes appear, and the skin becomes dryer and less pliable. Many factors determine the degree and rate of aging - heredity, tobacco use, sun exposure among others. We recommend you start as early as possible taking good care of your skin, after all, it has to last a lifetime. One of the characteristics of aging skin that accentuates changes in the texture is the buildup of the dead or keratinous layer of the epidermis. As you age the thickness of this layer continues to slowly increase, causing wrinkles, blemishes, and pores to become more noticeable. Today, "exfoliation" is one of the skin care media catchwords. This is simply a term for reducing the thickness of the top, dead layer of skin thereby making the effects of aging less apparent.
It seems like everyone has a new cream, gel, or treatment vying for your attention as you try to maintain youthful skin or turn back the clock. A few key observations have become apparent to us as we have sought to help patients improve the texture of their skin over the past 20 years.
Always use quality skin care products.
- Avoid excessive sun exposure and do not smoke.
- Beware of "miracle" cures.
- You get what you pay for!

Patients must be aware that this treatment modality, unlike laser resurfacing, does not injure living, deeper layers of skin, and therefore periodic maintenance is required. Much like a perm which needs to be an ongoing part of your hair care, every month or two a single peel is needed to maintain and optimize the results.
What microdermabrasion can do in most patients:
rapidly exfoliates portions of the dead layer of your skin.
- reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles.
- soften the effects of reticular acne scarring.
- lighten age spots and many other blemishes.
- helps open up unsightly glands.
- reduce the size of pores.
What microdermabrasion cannot do:
- tighten up loose, sagging skin.
- remove blood vessel growths.
- permanently change the texture of your skin.
- treat or prevent skin cancer.
What are the risks?
Microdermabrasion is designed to remove only the dead layer of your skin. However because everyone's skin varies minor deeper irritation can occur. Though any break in the skin can lead to potential bleeding, infection, and scarring we have not seen this in any of our patients.
Is there much pain involved?
The procedure does not generally effect the living layer of skin where pain fibers are located. Some patients experience a scratching sensation during the peel and a tingling or slight burning afterwards akin to the effects of mild excess sun exposure. Makeup can generally be applied immediately after treatment.

is the most precise, controlled and predictable tool available to provide a dramatic and long lasting improvement in the quality and texture of your skin. Although much more involved and more costly that the peels noted above laser surfacing is an option that you may want to discuss with your physician at Plastic Surgery Associates of Tidewater.
Gravity keeps our feet on the ground. It also makes our skin sag. Weight gain and loss can also accelerate this process. As we get older, the techniques of skin resurfacing unfortunately are less effecting in tightening up the baggy skin that collects around the eyes, and under the jaw line, and on the cheeks and neck. In these instances mini or full Facelift procedures provide the most dramatic and long lasting results. We have cared for patients from their teens to their eighties who have benefitted tremendously from facelift techniques. You may be surprised to know that patients seeking this operation for facial rejuvenation are most commonly in the 40-55 year age group.
